University Laboratory Refurbishment

The University of Birmingham is one of the oldest established, so-called 'redbrick' universities in the UK, and has a great reputation, particularly for medicine, law, science & engineering.

Our specialist Sales Engineer, John Pidgley, has a long working relationship with the Estates Department here, and so when they needed refurbishment & relocation of laboratories in their Chemical Engineering department, he was called in to help.

In a competitive tender exercise, John won the work, which consisted of

  • Strip-out of all redundant services from both Laboratories.
  • Relocation of Laboratory Water Purifying System.
  • Installation of Hot and Cold Water Services to Sinks and Fume Cupboards.
  • Relocation and re-commissioning of 3 No Full Size Fume Cupboards.
  • Relocation and re-commissioning of 2 No Bench Mounted Recirculation Fume Cabinets.
  • Design and Installation of New Flammable Fume Extraction system serving the 3No relocated Fume Cupboards, consisting of a Roof Mounted Centrifugal Fan Unit, inlet attenuator and all associated Laboratory Standard PVC ductwork (DW154).
  • Design and Install Air Replacement System, consisting of New Air handling Unit, which was delivered to site In ‘Kit Form’ due the restricted roof access and assembled on site, all necessary MTHW Flow and Return Pipe-work Services, Supply Ductwork (Spec dW144), including Fire/ Volume Control Dampers and 2No Specialist Laboratory ‘Air Socks’.
  • Liaise with the University’s Controls/BMS engineers during commissioning to establish Laboratory Pressure Differential Regime.

All this was a carried out on time, and within budget - more are on the way, as they were so pleased with the end result.
